New children’s choice strategy 2019/20

Children’s choice meetings were previously held termly to ensure all voices were heard with regards to asking for equipment, activities, snack ideas, likes or dislikes at the club. This has now progressed to a wall display of a tree called Treesa. Treesa tree is situated on the wall above the children’s coat pegs. Treesa is our new children’s choice tree who has owls on her branches. The children are encouraged to put forward ideas for their after school club by drawing or writing down their request on a piece of paper which will be added to the owl. This is a more visual way for everyone of displaying the choices the children are making to help improve their experience at their after school club.

Spring/ Summer 2019

SNACK – 2017/18

*Parental Involvement Provides A Positive Link Between Home and After School Club*

We have previously provided a balance of healthy and enjoyable snack options daily on a 4 weekly cycle, however we are now looking for more parental involvement in our snack options and would like to kindly ask parents and carers to discuss with your child/ children what they would enjoy eating at after school club and inform staff so we can support children’s interests.

Snack contributions are always highly appreciated.

Unfortunately we cannot accept any home baking due to strict allergy guidelines, or foods containing nuts.

If you would like to get involved please feel free to drop off contributions with any member of staff.

N.B: St Marys after school club always take into account special dietary requirements.

Please see previous snack menus below for helpful hints or ideas for parent contributions.

Thank you from all of the After School Club Team

Positive Reward system

Our reward system which involves reinforcing our golden rules and children demonstrating positive behaviour is extremely effective. Our golden rules were created and written by our children. This term we have been reinforcing the golden rules by playing a memory game involving covering up either one or two of the golden rules and the children are encouraged to guess which golden rules are missing. The child who can guess correctly will receive a small prize. To promote fairness and equality, every child will be provided with the opportunity to correctly guess the missing golden rule.

Empowerment Project

Our empowerment project involves monthly ‘Children’s Choice Meetings’. The children have the right to their say regarding activities they like and dislike and what resources they would like to have at the club to make their time at the club more enjoyable

During Autumn 2017 term, our empowerment meeting was chaired by one of our children and two others typed up the minutes of the meeting whilst some other children participated in offering ideas. Please click the link below to view the minutes of the termly meeting.

At St Marys after school club we make every effort possible to ensure children’s suggestions are met.

These photos demonstrate the children being actively involved in our recent empowerment/ children’s choice meetings.

Key worker System

We have a key worker system at St Marys after school club. This involves a member of staff having a small group of named key children. The Play Worker is then responsible for each individual child’s records, observations, planning, progress, behaviour management, communication with parents/carers and any problems that may arise. Each key worker will have approximately 10 children each. All children will be informed of who is their key worker and that this member of staff is their ‘special’ staff member. A list of key children and their key workers is currently on display in the club.

Here is a photo of our new key worker display for 2017/18

Here is our previous display of the key worker list for 2016/17. The children designed their interpretation of what the staff look like…

1 in 4 local children are living in poverty.

We are asking parents to buy an extra present that we can give to a disadvantaged local child to make their Christmas morning special. We need new (not 2nd hand) and unwrapped gifts suitable for children and young people aged 0-18 years, and you can donate at St Marys after school club from 20th November 2017.

Staff and children will take all presents received round to the Forth on studio at Forth Street before end school term.

Christmas Arts and Crafts will be available throughout the whole month of December!
